It’s early March in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and this weekend and into early next week, we will be hitting summer-time temperatures! What does this mean? The bugs will be waking up and traveling out of their little huts and homes to explore this warm weather. This undoubtedly will mean that we will see ants and other critters crawling on our kitchen counters, on the floors of our homes, and on bathroom sinks!
Where do ants go in the winter, and why do you suddenly see them in your home? This is a great question and it was asked of me by a customer of mine in Warminster, Pennsylvania. So ants go into a state of Diapause, akin to the bear that hibernates. I actually had a few ant calls back in the winter when the temps crept up. As quickly as these ants were seen, they were gone! But now the spring season is right around the corner and the temperatures are not creeping up but springing up fast. Once these temps go up then the ants who moved into your home, probably in the fall and perhaps under your radar, wake up from that diapaused state and start looking for food.
All that to say that when you see them, it is best to contact a professional. You don’t want to spray with over-the-counter sprays as this can cause a budding situation. What does that mean? Budding is where the ants you spray and kill don’t come back to the nest, and that sends panic throughout the nest, and those ants leave behind a colony, but send out explorers to find another hiding space in your home, maybe behind your walls in the living room, maybe up to a bedroom, and they set up a new colony and start growing it! Now you are faced with a much more difficult problem to deal with. Ants can be tricky.
