It’s freezing cold outside on a late January day and the Eagles are one game away from the Superbowl, so is it too early to talk about ants? Nope!
Ants in this region of the country, from my area in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania on up to Warminster, Pennsylvania will definitely go into a state of Diapause in the winter, but we still get call for ants crawling in people’s homes and commercial businesses.
Looking forward a few months when spring arrives, we will be battling the onslaught of ants. Here are some of the enemies to the home and business.
Carpenter Ants-Not an ant to be taken lightly. These buggers will post up in a massive colony and then branch out to create sub-colonies, and that sub colony could very well be in your home. They will pick a hollow area, or they will build out their own home sweet home. When this happens, they look for damp wood to excavate a gallery in. When this happens one of the classic signs the homeowner will see is that look like wood shavings, like someone just drilled a hole into a wooden post. Other signs to look for would be a “rustling” noise or late-night trailing. These ants tricky to get rid of and should be handles by a professional like the technicians at Grove Pest Control.
All the others? Well in the area we have odorous house ants, pavement ants, and pharaoh ants to name a few. They will infest your kitchen, basement, or the whole house. Same goes for your business, especially restaurants where the odor of food is like a long-lost friend for these buggers. Ants are best dealt with by a professional pest control company. I can’t tell you how many times we get a call from a homeowner who have tried to do it themselves and they tell me that they’ve sprayed raid or home defense on them. I cringe when I hear that because all they did was make it worse. Ants in stress will break off from their main colony and “bud” or start another colony within the same structure. Getting sprayed by raid is what we call stress. So these ants break away and now you have 2 colonies, or 3 or 4.
So what do the pros have that I don’t have? We have a spray that we call a “non-repellent”. All that means is that it’s designed to kill slower. So, the ants crawl back and forth, all the while spreading the chemical to the other ants in the colony, ultimately resulting in death for the ants. It’s the most effective way to handle ants.
